Review: Robin Thicke – “Sex Therapy” | ♥ ♥ X X X

I’m not the biggest fan of male r’&’b (other than Kellz, occasionally The-Dream and sometimes I fancy myself some Jay Sean) and this, the fourth studio album by singer-songwriter Robin Thicke is, I’m sorry to say, the perfect example why as it’s melted sugar on a pile of dry sugar cubes.

I’m pretty sure that some wise woman told you the old “never judge the book, record or a person by it’s cover”-rant about a 100 times throughout your childhood, but this is the day when it’s perfectly okay to do just that. Cause the cover to “Sex Therapy” embodies _everything_ about the album (Thicke’s first album with a Parental Advisory warning label printed on it). You go figure… Sleaze light would be the perfect label.

The album is out today in two versions, the regular “The Sessions” (with 12 tracks) and this deluxe one, “The Experience”, which has five additional tracks. Unlike most other special editions, where the bonus tracks are all at the end, the extra tracks on “The Experience” are mixed in with the regular “Session”-tracklisting.

“Sex Theraphy – The Experience” begins with a call to 911 and the whole record is a play with the female patient and Robin as the role as the good old sex therapist. This approach is really annoying. The female patient is supposed to be sexy with her voice but all I’m getting from this patient/doctor-thing is uncomfortable flashes from a crossover between the b-horror movie “The Dentist” and that disgusting gynaecologist in “The Hand That Rocks The Cradle” and I’m pretty sure that was not was dear Mr. Thicke was going for.

But well, let’s try to break this album down. I actually had huge expectations since ‘Meiplé’ ft. Jay-Z & ‘Shakin’ it 4 Daddy’ ft. Nicki Minaj leaked onto the Internet. The tracklist loooks huge with several interesting names such as Estelle (‘Rollacoasta’), The Game (‘Diamonds’), Snoop Dogg (‘It’s In the Mornin’), KiD CuDi (‘Elevatas’) & Jazmine Sullivan (‘Million Dollar Baby’) among the features. The problem is, them features are way more interesting than Robin Thicke himself. He sort of floats by, unnoticed, blends into the background.

The first time I listened to the album I feel asleep right after KiD CuDi’s verse on ‘Elevatas’. If “Sex Therapy” isn’t a snooze-fest I honestly don’t know what is. Now I can keep myself awake past that track, but when Robin has to do all the work by himself, without any featured artist them yawns starts to kick in again, esp. on tracks #12-16 as they all sound the same.

The grand problem is, Thicke’s voice is too weak on most tracks, that’s why he blends into the background and why most tracks floats by without ever getting noticed. That’s really sad, cause he can actually sing, ’2 Luv Birds’ is more than proof. But high falsetto (as in ‘Sex Therapy’) isn’t his forte, that’s for sure. He’s not Justin Timberlake and should lay off that approach permanently.

But as I said, the whole album isn’t one uncomfortable sleazy therapy-session. It has some bright spots. The brightest is the Polow da Don-produced ‘Shakin’ it 4 Daddy’ ft. Nicki Minajthat came about thanks to Jay-Z, here performed yesterday on 106 & Park:

CuDi’s verse on ‘Elevatas’ is great, another is like I already mentioned ‘Meiplé’ ft. Jay-Z and the last track, ‘Diamonds’ ft. Game is the perfect ending.
