Review: Wale “Attention: Deficit” | ♥ ♥ ♥ X X
Before we do anything, let’s move back to the 11th of July 2007. Wale, a rapper from Washington, D.C I never heard of before released his third mixtape “100 Miles & Running”. I enjoyed the ”W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E’ because ‘D.A.N.C.E’ was (and still is for that matter) the only track by the very overrated duo The Justice I could tolerate, loved ‘Ice Cream Girl’, loved that remix of Lily Allen’s ‘Smile’ signed Mark Ronson and was baffled by that clean cover and the hot sneaker-lace-font.
Then November came and Wale completely knocked my socks off with his ‘Nike Boots’, the best song about damn ugly shoes since The Pack’s ‘Vans’. And that remix with Lil Wayne had me head over heels.
But then the spring of 2008 came and Wale released “The Mixtape About Nothing” where he extensively samples from Seinfeld and peppers his raps with frequent reference to jokes and catch phrases from the series and I went on off mode, didn’t like the Seinfeld play at all, worst sitcom ever.
That was then, now Wale manages to get trending topics on Twitter and doing collaborations with Lady GaGa. In other words, much have changed. Wale is no longer unknown to the big mass, even if the Swedish radio STILL can’t pronounce his name and refers to him as a whale instead (sidebar: funny story today, for the second time someone called Timbo’s new gem: SoShy for SUSHI, yes, I LOL’d hard).
Even if Wale has grown big we still find familiar names such as mister Ronson and Best Kept Secret from them old mixtapes on the debut album “Attention: Deficit”, released today via Allido, Interscope.
“Attention: Deficit” sums up Wale pretty good. There’s some stupidly good track on it and some more reminiscent of the tired Wale like he was on diazapam from the BET-cypher the other week. The thing that surprises me the most are actually the productions. As said in a previous post regarding this album, Ronson’s ’90210′ is amazing, The Sleepwalkers’ on ‘Diary’ (ft. Marsha Ambrosius) give me chills and The Neptunes kills on ‘Let It Loose’.
Other tracks that shines an extra amount are of course that collabo with Lady GaGa in ‘Chillin’ (prolly THE best track of the album, along with ’90210′, despite the ‘Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye’-sample), the third single ‘Pretty Girls’ with Gucci Mane & Weensey and ‘TV in the Radio’ ft. K’Naan. The rest of them 14 feels a bit dull a bit like… stuffing to be honest. I wanna like ‘Mirrors’, mostly for the Bun B feature, but I don’t, same goes for ‘World Tour’ with Jazmine Sullivan and ‘Mama Told Me’ but I get sleepy.
All and all, a good album, a fair debut, came out way over my expectations. But the biggest issue I have with Wale still remains after this, he and the album is so uneven, like 50% of what he does is bat shit crazy good and the rest of the 50% is like I said, on that sleepy-diazapam-level.
Guess I would rate “Attention Deficit” 3 of 5 and buy it over at Amazon or

Yeah, kinda gotta say that this is an amazing album and tracks like World Tour are the reason why. The filler is fucking fantastic. Also, if you don't like Seinfeld or Justice you shouldn't be allowed near a keyboard. That is all.
